Skin Care Aging..continued from page 3
Normally, our body handles free radical formation naturally, but as we age everything slows down including the production of our body’s free radical defense system. Between birth and approximately age 27, our body is able to effectively neutralize free radical activity with a normal production of antioxidants resulting in less damage during these years. At age 27 and beyond, our body starts to slow its biological processes. Natural antioxidant production falls below the level of free radical activity and cellular damage progressively increases in volume. It is estimated that each cell in the top layer of our skin has 5,000 exposures to free radicals every day. As a result, the skin has the potential to age faster than any other organ in the body, and because of a decreased supply of antioxidants, the aging process becomes faster every year. By age 82 it is estimated that the process of free radical damage is 60 times greater than at age 22.
One of the many amazing things our body does for us is to manufacture its own free radical fighters. They are known as antiaging antioxidants. Spin Trapping is another way free radical damage can be neutralized.
Antiaging Antioxidants are substances that protect living tissues and fluids, from
oxidizing. Antiaging Antioxidants neutralize free radicals by donating one of their own electrons, to end the electron-"stealing" reaction. The antioxidant nutrients themselves don’t become free radicals by donating an electron because they are stable no matter what form they are in. They act as scavengers, helping to repair damage done by free radicals and prevent cell and tissue damage that could lead to cellular damage and disease. Generally speaking, antiaging antioxidants destructively deal with free radicals.
